Exquisite Victorian 14K Dionysus Meerschaum Cameo Brooch

Description

This is an exquisite cameo, unlike most cameos. This cameo is hand carved from Meerschaum. Meerschaum is a soft white claylike material consisting of hydrated magnesium silicate. This material was primarily used in pipes starting from the 1700's. This brooch is Victorian dating from roughly the mid 1800s. The carving is very three-dimensional. The head is of Dionysus, god of wine harvest. The details in this carving are excellent with very intricate features throughout. The cameo is drilled pinned and mounted in the lovely 14K yellow gold ribbon frame. Hanging from the middle of the gold frame are three bunches of grapes to further represent this god. The gold is not hallmarked but tested as 14K yellow gold. The straight pin has been replaced at some point, but functions as it should, just not 14K, but silver. The condition of the carving is immaculate and fabulously done. I do see a bit on the lower left neck that may have been a fracture at some point. None-the-less, this is a brilliant piece.
