  • Condition: The cameo is slightly loose in the frame but not in danger of falling out. It has one small surface chip on the back at the top. It can only be seen when you hold it up to the light. I'm not sure if the colt's tail is intentionally cropped or was broken off. Slightly dirty in the crevices. The 14 karat gold frame has minor wear and, as stated in the description, the hinge and clasp are replacements and soldered on.

    Description

    Today I am selling a beautiful, large Victorian shell cameo brooch depicting a horse family running in a field. The galloping stallion and mare, and the colt rearing up on its hind legs are intricately carved in an overlapping design. A fence is in the background, along with a barn to the right and a house to the left. Although the carving is not very dimensional, it is detailed and has depth to the scene. The slightly curved, oval shell is bezel set in a custom gold frame that is decorated with textured flowers and leaves and a wire rope border. It is not hallmarked but acid tests positive for 14 karat gold. The safety clasp and the hinge are later replacements and soldered on, but they're also gold. The pin is a little loose but stays closed securely in the clasp.
    CONDITION: Very good for its age. The cameo is slightly loose in the frame but not in danger of falling out. It has one small surface chip on the back at the top.
