Description
6 WWI letters sent by Erwin Larrabee while aboard USS McDougal to his family in East Walpole Mass. Erwin served as an electrician in the USN.Letter dated June 9 1916 . . . Sailed from NY Sunday June 11 1916 at noon . . . Seas were running high and a heavy fog reduced to 12 knots we pretty near run aground at the desert island just at the entrance of Bar harbor. . .
Letter dated June 21 1916 . . . Received your letter. . . Yesterday we had a speed run of 6 hours at sea made 32 knots smokeless was out all day . . .before that we oiled ship at Bradford . .
Letter dated Aug 27 1916 . . Newport . . .steamed from there to Bermuda and had our war game between there and Florida . . . We run to a storm . .three days and three nights . . .so rough couldn’t sleep on our bunks. . . Couldn’t cook anything . .ocean looked like lots of hills and valleys . . We kept on with the war game all the time just the same, , .we had all kinds of sham battles . . .a lot of sick sailors on this trip over half the ships company . . .
Letter dated Oct 2 1916 . . . We are still at Newport R.I. having torpedo practice . . . I just bought a hammock and have sent it home by express . .
Letter dated Oct 19 1916 . . . Got the 5 o’clock train out of Taunton. . The ship was in . . I found it tied up at three torpedo station dock . . Reported in . Here in Newport . . Until Monday Oct 23rd and then we will go out and fire torpedoes in Long Island Sound . .
Letter dated Nov 1st 1916 . . .torpedo practice was up in Buzzard Bay . .had a tug boat towing a target which consists of 3 or 4 small boats each tied back of each other in line , , towed at about 12 knots . .the torpedo boats come on range at about 20 knots and shoot four torpedoes one after a thief as fast as they can . .They turn and chase then so it get them again to shoot over again . .
